String quartets are kind of magical: four individuals become one entity, and through the music they play, they show us all what’s possible through listening, together.

It’s no wonder composers have been inspired to write for string quartets for hundreds of years.

This year, Music on Main invites you to discover two amazing young ensembles, the Cedar Quartet and the Sequoia Quartet, as they perform moving, inspiring music by Maurice Ravel, Aleksandr Borodin, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

This free family concert is a great introduction to classical music for kids. Bring the family, or come on your own! You’ll be among the first to hear a new generation make their mark on the music scene while connecting with beautiful music.

This concert has been generously supported by Eileen Mate and by Brian Laberge & David Pay.

Today’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Susan Kessler, who passed away October 6, 2021 at the age of 107. Throughout her life, Susan was an ardent supporter of music, and she especially loved string quartets and string music. In honour of Susan’s 100th birthday, Susan’s Swiss relatives and BC friends sponsored the first Kessler Academy, an annual mentorship workshop for young string players produced yearly by The Microcosmos Quartet in co-operation with Music on Main. Susan’s legacy lives on in the Kessler Academy and with the many friends she made through music.
