Highlights of the 2024/2025 Season

New community projects: Music on Main is partnering with BC Brain Wellness to bring two exciting events that aim to enhance mental well-being through music. Join us online on October 9th for a “Wellness Wednesday” featuring Music on Main artist Erika Switzer and PhD student in neuroscience, Mikey Jose. Following this, on October 20th, Music on Main will be hosting an in-person participatory Intergenerational Song Sharing Event with Cynthia Friesen designed to bring together people of all ages to experience joy and connection through music.

That’s not all—Music on Main is teaming up with The Only Animal (TOA) to present several events called Slow Socials: Around Sound. TOA is an interdisciplinary arts company whose mission is to bring art and artists to the heart of the climate crisis. For these collaborative events, Music on Main will invite artists from our season and from TOA’s sound installation project “AWSS” (Autumn-Winter, Spring-Summer) for artistic exchange and informal discussion of their practices. Dates for these unique experiences are coming soon, so stay tuned for more details.

All new community events are free, with registration required for the Intergenerational Song Sharing on October 20th.

Modulus Festival Changes: Music on Main’s celebrated Modulus Festival is becoming a biennial event: mark your calendars for its return in November 2025! The Modulus Festival is known around the world as one of Canada’s most important new music events. The change to a biennial festival will allow Music on Main to continue planning and delivering an internationally significant festival, despite stagnant government funding and rising production costs. Stay tuned for news on the dynamic, powerful programming that will be featured when Modulus returns in November 2025!

Flat Earth Society: The main season opens on November 3rd as Music on Main brings back Flat Earth Society to the Roundhouse for a one-night extravaganza! One of Belgium’s most original bands on the jazz and avant-garde musical scene, their music is both meticulously composed and delightfully spontaneous —95% handcrafted with 100% chance of a good time.

Music for the Winter Solstice 2024: The beloved Holiday special continues! Music on Main returns with our annual tradition that is anything but conventional. At the most crucial point of the winter in Vancouver, when the rain is constant and darkness comes too early, Music on Main will bring light to Heritage Hall, transforming the gloom of winter into a celebration of the Winter Solstice. Experience the mesmerizing performances of Ringdown, featuring American composer, violinist, and singer Caroline Shaw, and multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Danni Lee, plus Vancouver’s virtuoso pianist Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa.

Bijuriya: Gabriel Dharmoo is a music composer and experimental vocalist. Bijuriya is a drag artist engaging with South Asian culture. Gabriel values innovation and risk taking as he navigates Eurocentric artistic scenes. Bijuriya seeks to touch the hearts of fellow brown queers. Both have marginal practices, engaging very different audiences. Gabriel and Bijuriya are one person, coming on stage as one to negotiate their hybrid and multifaceted identity.

Gabriel Dharmoo’s past sold-out performances have captivated audiences around the globe. Mark your calendars for when the award-winning composer behind the hit show Anthropologies Imaginaires takes over the ANNEX as the otherworldly Bijuriya.

Co-presented with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.

BIG BANG Festival: Coming to Vancouver for the first time, BIG BANG is a festive ode to adventurous music and sound art for young audiences. It promises a vibrant journey through a diverse range of melodic experiences, where children don’t have to sit still and listen but get to discover new sound concepts that captivate with their originality. The Festival has already enchanted audiences across Europe and Latin America. Its recent success in Ottawa and Quebec City marked a triumphant debut in North America, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience in Vancouver.

Co-presente with Zonzo Compagnie and Roundhouse

A Month of Tuesdays: Enjoy four concerts that blend the classic with the unexpected, as the series showcases both established stars and emerging talents. In April 2025, The Fox Cabaret will come alive with an exciting array of performances, featuring international sensation Laura Bowler with Standing Wave Ensemble, composer and electronic music artist Alfredo Santa Ana, violinist Chloe Kim, pianist Eve Egoyan, and Dálava, known for reanimating traditional songs from Slovácko (Czechia) with a unique blend of folk, improvisation, new classical, and ritual.

Indigenous Voices

As Music on Main listens and works to respond to calls for action from Indigenous leaders in the performing arts and Indigenous mentors with whom we are in community, we remain committed to pursuing education and dialogue for staff and board, and utilizing our platform to uplift the voices of Indigenous artists, musicians, composers, and creators. Music on Main is working on several projects in community with Tsleil-Waututh artists and youth and taking part in the “Musicians for Reconciliation Initiative”. Additionally, we are offering free tickets to those who self-identify as Indigenous, ensuring greater access and representation within our community.
