Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire @ 100
Monday, October 15, 2012

9:00 PM

(note late start time)

Presented with Western Front New Music.

You know Edvard Munch’s Expressionist masterpiece The Scream?  Well, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire shows us what Expressionism sounds like.

100 years to the day that Pierrot Lunaire premiered, Music on Main produces a cabaret that shines a light on the masterpiece that changed the course of vocal music forever.

Singer, visual artist and improviser Carol Sawyer joins composer/pianist Lisa Cay Miller for a seriously fun journey from 1910s Berlin Cabaret song through to today’s craziest vocal sounds. Then after drinks and intermission, Robyn Driedger-Klassen takes on the role of Pierrot, tapping into the internal psychodrama of ever-changing, turbulent times.

Pierrot Lunaire brings to life the strange poetry of Albert Giraud.  Surrounded by a cabaret-like musical ensemble, the character of Pierrot constantly transforms, from female to male, from rational to irrational, from sober to ecstatic.

100 years after its creation, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire continues to challenge and confound, shock and delight.

Discover for yourself why it’s a cornerstone of 20th Century art that all art lovers want to know.
